Cataracts

A cataract is a common eye condition that affects the clarity of vision. The lens, which is normally clear and transparent, becomes cloudy, leading to blurred or dim eyesight. This clouding occurs gradually over time and can significantly impact daily activities such as reading, driving, and watching television.

  • Cataracts primarily develop due to aging, but other factors can contribute to their formation. These factors may include:

    • Age: The natural aging process can cause changes in the lens, leading to cataracts.

    • UV Exposure: Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight increases the risk of cataracts.

    • Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions such as diabetes or hypertension can accelerate the development of cataracts.

    • Trauma or Injury: Physical trauma to the eye can damage the lens and contribute to the development of cataracts.

  • The symptoms of cataracts can vary but commonly include:

    • Blurred or cloudy vision

    • Difficulty seeing at night or in low light conditions

    • Sensitivity to light and glare

    • Fading or yellowing of colors

  • While there is no proven way to prevent cataracts from developing, regular eye exams can help detect them early.

Regularly wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays from the sun can not only prevent cataracts from forming but also slow down the progression of existing cataracts.

If cataracts begin to interfere with daily activities, surgical intervention may be recommended. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens, restoring clear vision.
