Orthokeratology

What is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology (OrthoK) is a non-surgical procedure that uses specially designed custom rigid gas permeable contact lenses to temporarily reshape the cornea of the eye to correct vision problems such as myopia (near-sightedness) or astigmatism. These lenses are worn overnight while sleeping, and they gently reshape the cornea, providing clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

  • OrthoK lenses are special custom-made lenses that are designed to correct vision while you sleep.

These lenses are worn overnight for a minimum for 8 hours, and gently reshape the cornea - the front, clear outer layer of the eye. This process corrects your vision so you can see clearly without glasses or contact lenses after you remove the lenses in the morning.

  • There are several benefits that OrthoK offers.

    • Non-surgical vision correction: OrthoK lenses offers a non-surgical alternative to correct vision. Unlike laser eye surgery, OrthoK lenses are removable and reversible, making them suitable for those who want to avoid surgical procedures, or are not eligible for surgery.

    • Myopia control: Studies have shown OrthoK lens are effective in slowing down the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children and young adults.

    • Convenience: Enjoy the freedom of clear vision without the hassle of wearing glasses or contact lenses during the day! This is especially convenient for activities such as sports, swimming, or simply enjoying a day without the restrictions of glasses or contact lenses.

  • OrthoK works best for individuals who have low-moderate myopia, it may also correct some astigmatism but can vary from patient to patient.

Book an appointment with our optometrist who will do further assessments to determine your eligibility. Our optometrist will gather information relating to you - such as your prescription, age, lifestyle and habits. Our optometrist will also assess your eye health and will determine whether OrthoK is suitable for you.

  • Yes, OrthoK is reversible. OrthoK lenses work by gently reshaping the cornea when worn overnight while sleeping. When you stop wearing OrthoK lenses, the cornea will gradually return to its original shape and your vision may revert to it’s pre-treatment state.
